Other Adventures in NYC 05/02/2012
I only had a take out burger from Quintessence, and ate it at the airport before flying home. BUT, it was one of the best raw vegan burgers I've tasted! The corn chips were great, too. Lastly, I have to mention that Whole Foods in New York (which one was it?) had the most amazing sprout box salad. The sprouts were fresh, plentiful, and a nice variety. I wish we had something like this close to home. Add Comment Gingersnap's Organic - a little gem 05/02/2012
We had to try Gingersnap's Organic. Michael saw a post by the owner on Facebook to another raw chef we know; which said something like, "You have to try my new ice cream." That was it, we made a plan to have our last lunch here. This is a nice size place with tables and bar seating. They also have fridges stocked with Norwalk pressed juices, desserts, and meals to go.
First we shared a green juice - it was perfect. Then I saw right away on the menu that they had a "REUBEN". I had to order it - I used to love reuben sandwiches and we were in New York of all places... Pure Food & Wine - Rocks! 05/02/2012
If you find yourself in NYC, please go eat at this restaurant! It doesn't matter if you are raw, vegan, or any other type of eater - you will love the food here. It was a cold and rainy evening, and we showed up for a late dinner around 7:30 pm and the place was packed. We had to sit at the bar and wait for a table. While seated in this cozy area, we decided to order some apps before deciding what we'd have for main plates. We were so hungry and wanted to start eating ASAP. (7:30 is a LATE dinner for us -chm, chm). For appetizers we ordered a stuffed mushroom and then the Philly Roll - that was AMAZING!
Long Island - Live Island 05/02/2012
Our second day in NY - we were excited to hear a new raw vegan restaurant opened not far from family. We decided to check out Live Island Cafe for lunch. I recognized the owner, raw chef Okima Wilcox was busy in the back kitchen making beautiful dishes. This is a small cafe, without indoor seating. You go in and check out what you want from their cold case. We decided to try the recommended sample box, one main dish with two sides. I ordered falafels as my main dish, ithen I chose local asparagus and pad thai as sides. The pad thai noodles were made from yams. Michael ordered the tacos with walnut filling, and sides of falafel and pad thai. The seasoning on the tacos was SPECTACULAR!
Sun in Bloom - Park Slope, Brooklyn, NY 05/02/2012
Michael and I had to be in New York for a family event and got prepared with a list of raw vegan restaurants. Our first stop was Sun in Bloom, a small cafe that highlights gluten-free, vegan, and raw food. We drove there straight from the airport to have dinner. I looked at the menu online before showing up. They have an assortment of dishes that can be made as a wrap in a collard green, as a sandwich with Ezekiel sprouted bread, or as a salad.
They also have Norwalk pressed juices, smoothies, and raw desserts. When we walked in, the first thing I noticed was the refrigerator case that had a bunch of prepared items. Take a look at the pudding and coconut kefir below. Don't Miss this Special Event! 04/27/2012

I am still playing around with the recipes I got from Hippocrates Health Institute. The raw pizza was a recipe I got after Chef Ken did a demo... And the same day we had raw pizza as our side dish at lunch (it was my last day at HHI, too). I remember the crust being crispy, the sauce thick and tangy, and the cheeze super flavorful. First, I made the crust because it has to dehydrate overnight. Here's the ingredients, I slightly changed the Hippocrates recipe and used chia seeds instead of psyllium husk powder:
Process the nuts, seeds, and dried herbs until it's a fine crumble. Add the wet ingredients and and process again until you have a sticky dough. Spread into circle shapes to about 1/4 inch thick onto dehydrator sheets. I like to make the outer edge a bit thicker. Dehydrate overnight. Flip and dehydrate for a good part of the next day. Next, you need to make the sauce so you can pour it on and dehydrate overnight again. April Pot Luck is on the 28th 04/08/2012
We hope you will join us for our next raw vegan, living foods pot luck at our home in Novato, CA. You can join our Meet-Up: Novato Raw Vegans and RSVP there. P.S. You don't have to keep this lifestyle all the time to join us. Please bring an organic raw vegan dish to share with about 8-10 people. We are steering away from desserts this month and hoping you will bring delicious savory dishes and lots of sprouting green things to honor the spring season. Please bring your own plate and utensils. We look forward to sharing a meal with you. Living Nut Loaf 04/03/2012
I finally made a version of the nut loaf they served while I was at Hippocrates Health Institute. I took the recipe from Anna Maria Clement's book, "Healthful Cuisine" and changed it up a bit. My recipe for the nut loaf includes: 4 cups raw, soaked, and dehydrated walnuts 2 cups raw, soaked, and dehydrated sunflower seeds 2 red bell peppers, chopped 1 cup chopped carrot 2 tbsp paprika 1 tbsp garlic powder 1 tbsp cumin 1 tbsp cilantro and parsley (I only had dried at home that day) Nama Shoyu to taste 1 cup diced onion 1 cup diced celery Take all the ingredients except the chopped onion and celery and run it through the homogenizing (blank) attachment of your juicer or blend into paste with a food processor. Mix in the chopped onion and celery. Spread onto a dehydrator sheet (solid) and form into a loaf. Dehydrate overnight and then then top with the red bell pepper ketchup and continue dehydrating for several more hours. Ketchup Recipe 2 cups red bell pepper 1/4 red onion a chunk of beet 2 tbsp paprika 2 tbsp ground flax 1 stalk celery 2 tsp garlic powder 2/3 cup olive oil 2 tbsp lemon juice 10 drops stevia Blend. Once dehydrated, it will take on a rich dark red color reminiscent of ketchup on meat loaf. Note that you can also make this recipe into patties, meatballs, burgers, or whatever shapes you like, just pay attention to the dehydration for smaller sizes so they don't get too dry. You can season the nut loaf with any kind of flavor you like to make it Mexican, Italian, Indian, etc. Also, play around with the base recipe, the basic idea is to have about 50/50 nuts and veg. Have fun and share your creations! Hippocrates Health Institute with my Sis 03/28/2012
My sister Naomi was unfortunately diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) over 15 years ago. Recently I suggested she go to the Hippocrates Health Institute for their 3 week Life Transformation Program. This was a big deal and I was ecstatic that she agreed to go. I went with her for the first week to help her get around and adjust to being there. And - to get some of the benefits for myself and to check it out. The institute's program consists of the following daily dietary structure: · Cucumber juice at 9 am · Green juice at 11 am · Lunch at 12:30 pm · Green Juice 4:30 pm · Dinner at 5:30 pm In between these juices and meals, you are also juicing and drinking wheatgrass, attending educational lectures and demos, receiving all kinds of therapies; doing enemas, colonics, and implants; and enjoying the lush tropical grounds, mineral pools, far-infrared saunas and full gym. Not to mention making new friends and enjoying good company. I loved the green juice, their recipe is half cucumber and celery juice and half pea and sunflower sprout juice. Sunflower sprouts are a complete protein and juicing them the best way to absorb their nutrition and get energized! Lunch and dinner were buffet style. The first half of the buffet had a variety of sprouts, such as more sunflower and pea sprouts, but also clover, broccoli and buckwheat sprouts, and sprouted lentils, mung beans and adzuki beans. These sprouts make up half your plate; and then you can add a variety carrots, bell peppers, other veg, and whatever special "side dish" they made for that meal. The "meat loaf” was so good. It's a nut loaf of half nuts and half veg ground into a paste (using the juicer) and dehydrating it with a special red bell pepper sauce on top; it looked and tasted like ketchup. They always had their house dressing as well as one other dressing, olives, sauerkraut, garlic, dulse, and other things to top off your salad with. There is no fruit, agave, honey or other sweeteners available. But with all that nutrition, there are zero cravings for sweets, seriously! The other part of this experience that I loved was being in such a beautiful place. The grounds at HHI are full of blooming tropical flowers and lush vegetation. I saw hibiscus and bougainvillea in all the colors they exist in! There were also benches and sweet spots tucked in near waterfalls all over campus. This added to the healing environment. |
